Imagine that you have been appointed as Apple's Chief Compliance Officer and must prepare a video presentation for Apple's suppliers regarding Apple's Supplier Code of Conduct to deliver via a web meeting. Businesses face several challenges in their day to day operations. These challenges are mainly attributed to stiff competition, unethical business practices and failure to embrace technology advancements. This paper analyses the global business environment of Apple Inc. and evaluates the code of conduct that guides the operations of the company.
1. List specific changes that Apple has made to its Code of Conduct in recent years. Provide at least one (1) example of each change.
Apple has made several changes in the areas like worker empowerment, accountability, and environmental conservation. The company increased its audits to the suppliers by 42% in 2014 to provide a more sustainable reporting. The company continues to ramp up the supplier audit function. Any company working directly or indirectly with Apple such as suppliers is subject to constant audits by Apple or Apple’s agents. In additions to the audits, the company has also elevated its concern about the welfare of the workers through workers’ education and empowerment projects.
In 2014, the company trained approximately 2.3 million workers about their rights and obligations as outlined in the code of conduct. In addition, the company also provided training programs to help the employees advance their working skills. Apple has invested millions of dollars in a training program known as the Supplier Employee Education and Development (SEED) program (Martin & Karen, 2015). Currently, SEED has a total of forty-three classrooms and twenty-three facilities equipped with video-conferencing systems, educational software, iMac computers and other tools that facilitate learning.
Apple has also changed the code of conduct to put more emphasis on environmental conservation measures. In 2015, the code was adjusted to achieve 76% compliance to the global environmental conservation strategy by managing hazardous products by 72%, wastewater management by 73%, and 71% air emission management. Other objectives included achievement of 85% solid water management, 94% pollution prevention and 88% boundary noise management (Martin & Karen, 2015). The changes in the company’s code of conduct contribute towards the achievement of its goals and objectives.

The company requires the suppliers to adhere to the strict standards which include a high accountability level, labor regulation, empowerment of workers and environment preservation measures. The suppliers have changed their operations to incorporate the code of conduct in their culture. These changes include the development of strategies to promote employee empowerment, environment preservation, and accountability. The suppliers also ensure that they adhere to the labor regulations by avoiding the employment of minors and avoiding discrimination among the employees.
