The gender pay gap
The gender pay gap is the disparity in earnings between men and women where men tend to earn higher for similar jobs to women. The mean average earnings are one of the most common measure to evaluate the gender pay gap. The earnings disparity is not only wages and salaries, but also bonuses. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2016, among full-time and salary wages women on average earned median weekly earnings that were 82% of their male counterparts, and this has increased compared to 62% in 1979 (BLS, 2017). The gender pay gap has narrowed as more women have entered the workplace, but there is still gender discrimination that may influence what employers pay.
