Corn remains to be the largest component of international trade. This amounts to three-quarters of the total yield produced over the years. A big amount of corn is traded mainly for food while the small amount is processed in industries. The United States is the largest producer of corn in the world. This plays an important role in the U.S. economy and in 2012, it was recorded to be 12% of total U.S. agricultural export. Countries like South Africa, China, Brazil, Ukraine, India and Russia are also producing and trading corn (United States Department of Agriculture, 2016).
If corn is no longer traded internationally, countries that import and export corn will suffer greatly. Economies that depend on corn to benefit from it economically will suffer and other food groups price will increase. For example, Japan, which makes by-products of corn, will suffer greatly because it will not be able to feed its own people and also sell the by-products of corn, which they make in their industries (United States Department of Agriculture, 2016).
Corn still remains very important to international trade. The U.S., China, South Africa, Brazil, Ukraine, India, Russia and developing countries in Africa are countries that mass produce corn because of its domestic need and also international trade. Corn has various by-products which include: sweeteners, flour, corn meal and corn gluten feed (United States Department of Agriculture, 2016). Corn is important in feeding population in countries that use corn as their source of food. If corn misses out in countries that depend on corn, hunger and starvation will result.
