The Liebeck verses the McDonald restaurant case is one of the tort reform cases that has caused great uproar throughout time. Liebeck was a 79 years old lady who got third degree burns, after trying to open the lid of a cup of hot coffee, she had purchased from the McDonalds restraint. According to the verdict in the case, the restaurant was found guilty of several counts of negligence. One they sold their coffee at more than 180 degree Fahrenheit and at this temperature the coffee can cause third degree burns in less than seven seconds. One of the restaurants witness admitted to the court that the restaurant does not alert the customers, although it is aware of the risk their hot coffee posses to the customers (Cheeseman, 2012). This had been brought to their attention for more than ten (1982-1992) consecutive years through 700 lawsuits, none of which went through. In their defense they said that they sold the coffee at such high temperature because customers liked to have the coffee hot as they drive, but, the data of the number of the customers who actually bought the coffee to drink immediately told a different story.
