A Wider Welcome – Canada Wants to Attract More Immigrants
The principal theme of this article is the continuing Canadian policy on immigration. Specifically, the author noted that while other countries are limiting migration because of the surge of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Canada has continued to push for immigration because they believe it is essential to their long-term economic success. Nonetheless, the author has noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has shown its effects on changing the type and class of “talents” that are admitted in the country. However, despite the benefits and advantages of immigration for both the State and the immigrants (i.e., better healthcare), the article has also shown that this has led to some abuses or disadvantages, especially those competing for permanent status in the country.
One of the critical strategic issues in this article is the importance of immigration for the State. It was explicitly shown that one of the main problems of Canada is the growing population of citizens who will be “pensioners” in the future.
Another critical strategic issue, in this case, is the disadvantages to the immigrants. The article has shown that one of the problems is the direct or indirect abuses that happen to the immigrants. Some immigrants work despite the low salaries and exhaust themselves to compete against one another regarding getting permanent residency.
The first implication for the country of the receding number of “productive citizens” is the fact that there will come a time when more individuals would need to rely on pensions and government grants rather than their own productive work. This would severely affect the country because it will have to pay more obligations than its production.
The second implication of this issue to the country is the need to improve the criteria for choosing who gets a permanent resident status. As stated in the article, one of the main problems is the over-competence required of those “temporary residents” who are hoping to get permanent residency in the country. Although this would benefit the State because of its greater production, it should also balance the economic benefit that the State derives from this with better healthcare coverage for these temporary residents.
