How does current immigration policy impact economic, security, and humanitarian policy?
The current immigration policy has a far-reaching impact on humanitarian, security, and economic aspects. For instance, Migrant Protection Protocols by former President Trump prevents the imprisonment of asylum seekers, especially women and children, until the hearing of their case. As a result, they return to Mexico and other home countries as they await their trial. Additionally, the change results from the concerns of humanitarians regarding the number of deaths while immigrants are in custody. Besides, U.S immigration policy has resulted in strict policing of the borders, especially in urban areas (Pierce et al., 2018). Furthermore, the policy promotes open trade to expand national income due to exports. Finally, as a strategy of preventing illegal immigration to the United States, the government has increased the number of Customs and Border patrol (CBP) agents (Pierce et al., 2018). The main focus of such a strategy is to discourage unauthorized entries to the United States and apprehend terrorists.
How was it treated prior to 9/11?
