Strategic Retailing
Introduction
Argos is a large digital retailer in the UK established in 1973. It is a merchandise retailer that offers 60,000 products using its apps, website, and inside points in Sainsbury supermarkets and stores. Argos is a toy retailer in the UK, and it also has different category products such as homewares, furniture, and electronics. Argos's website gets billions of visitors' attention each year and generates 90% of sales online (Sainsburys.co.uk, n.d.). The paper has discussed detailed information about the retail theories used in Argos, which will improve its efficiency and help the company to become competitive in the UK market.
Issues Faced by Argos in UK Market
Reduction in Sales and Profits due to Rising Inflation
COVID-19 impacted negatively on the profitability of Argos, and the company has faced a decline in its sales and profitability. COVID-19 is the main reason for rising inflation that has created external pressure on the cost of goods and customers' disposable income. Simon Robert, the Chief Executive of Argos, stated that the company has invested in cost-saving plans to reduce the prices of products. As per the CEO, Argos is a more profitable business that has generated 80% of its sales online. The logistics and supply chain operations integration of Argos and Sainsbury can save £250 million and provide a competitive edge to the company in terms of the cost of products (Anita, 2022). Argos also needs to invest in its workforce and enhance its salaries to make a Real Living Wage. Due to rising inflation, customers' disposable income has been reduced, and they demand less expensive products. Argos needs to improve its retail supply chain, reducing the cost of its products and maintaining its profitability.
Significant Job Cuts
Argos announced closing its distribution center, which has created a job risk for more than 230 employees. The primary purpose of the closure is an issue with the logistics system that has increased the cost of products (BBC, 2021). Argos will provide redeployment opportunities to its employees in Sainsbury.
Impact of COVID-19
COVID-19 has had a substantial impact on the performance and profitability of Argos. Sainsbury and Argos have faced a loss of £261 million. Argos has met huge COVID-19-related costs, such as payment to employees who need isolation and business rate relief. Argos needs to close one hundred seventy standalone stores and have to pay restructuring costs for those stores (BBC, 2021). The sale of the physical stores of Argos has reduced during COVID-19, but the digital store of the underlying company has faced a boom of 11%.
Application of Theories
The sales of Argos faced a decline of 11.9% as compared with 2021 due to difficulties in its supply chain. Due to COVID-19, the inflation rate has increased, and people's disposable income has decreased, which impacts buying behavior. Argo needs to focus on its retail supply chain activities to reduce the cost of products, which will help increase customers' purchasing power.
