This research study sets out to identify which forms of improvements can be implemented to humanitarian supply chains by the way of comparing them to ordinary commercial supply chains, which have noticeably different objective and lifespans from their humanitarian counter parts.

Aims of the Research:

1. To point out wastes in humanitarian aid supply chains and how it can be minimised or eliminated by copying for-profit approach;
2. To determine whether ‘normal’ commercial supply chain practices should be also adopted in humanitarian supply chain practices; and
3. To ascertain whether the members of humanitarian aid community possess enough commercial acumen and business know-how to implement ‘normal’ commercial supply chain practices.

Research Questions

The first research question is to see whether there is sufficient professional know-how to operate a rapid but effective humanitarian supply chain. That is to say, this research study will question the causes as to why more logistics and supply chain experts are not involved in humanitarian supply chain industry and examine the current availability of necessary training and relevant experience of the professionals in humanitarian aids industry.

The second research question involves whether commercial supply chain practices could benefit humanitarian supply chains.  That is to say, this research study will examine whether there are resources already in places to implement for-profit commercial strategies and mechanisms when attempting to achieve supply chains in dangerous and ephemeral circumstances. Thus, it would closely examine distribution, goods supply, financial resources and equipment in humanitarian supply chain industry.

Aims of the Research

To establish if the personnel on the humanitarian aid supply chains have what it takes to implement such kind of elements that may be identified in the first aim (Van Wassenhove, 2006).
To establish the elements of wastes that are associated with the humanitarian supply chain and further determine the best ways that the identified wastes can be minimized to much the characteristics of the commercial supply chains.
