A cross functional team is a team composed of members who have specialized in different fields, coming together to work towards a common goal. These team members might have specialized in different fields, such as engineering, finance, human resource or management. They might come together to ensure the success of a given project. The main reason for the formation of a team like this is that it is self contained. In other terms, it can solve a variety of problems by itself, since its members have mastery in various different fields. The difference between such a team and a department is that the members retain their respective functions within the departments they come from.
