The word limit for your essay is 1500 words + 10%, that is, 1650 words. The penalty for exceeding this limit is a deduction of 5 marks, and words beyond this will not be considered. The word count includes everything in the main body of the text - headings, tables plus table legends, figures plus figure legends, in text citations. We do not allow footnotes or appendices. The list of references (bibliography) included at the end of your essay is not included in the word count. When writing your essay plan and final submission remember to consult the College Marking Criteria, the marking rubric provided below. • Make sure that everything is written in your own words. Introduction
Animal models form an essential part of neuroscience studies' efforts to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of neurological diseases. The brain is a complex organ that controls all body functions. It is also responsible for communication, movement, perception, memory, emotions, and all activities that encompass an individual's behavior. Using animal models to study the human brain, an organ that differentiates human beings from animals, may appear paradoxical since animals lack many complex brain functions such as moral reasoning, intricate knowledge, learning skills, and advanced language. However, all animals have several basic brain functions and structures. Therefore, since humans' complex thoughts are made based on simpler cerebral processes and functions apparent in animals, the animal model's use helps to enlighten exceptional human behaviors. Despite the benefits associated with the use of animal models in gaining an insight into brain diseases, researchers claim that there are limitations to using animals. In this paper, I will discuss the advantages and limitations of using animal models to understand the human brain's diseases.
Advantages
The use of the animal model in studying human brain diseases has led to an intense improvement in human beings' general health and well-being. It shows the potential of many more improvements. It has led to the development of drug therapies that have transformed the treatment and prevention of mental diseases. Chlorpromazine drugs developed using an animal model in the 1950s and antipsychotic medicines have significantly eliminated the dreadful mental illnesses among patients. Additionally, antipsychotic drugs have been used to treat symptoms caused by schizophrenia, a condition that affects many Americans. Animal models have led to the development of Anti-anxiety drugs. The drugs have proven huge benefits in treating anxiety among human beings. 
Animal research experiments have been used to produce valuable information on impacts caused by optical stimulation on brain development, memory loss, aggression, stress, stroke, brain injury recovery, biofeedback techniques, and programmed learning in education. Therefore the use of the animal model has been of great importance in improving such human life aspects.
Current animal models such as dogs have been useful in understanding human brain diseases linked to aging and developing their treatments. Such diseases include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and Parkinson's disease (PD) (Dimond, 2017). The use of animal models has allowed medical researchers to develop, investigate, and improve the diseases' targeted therapies. Also, animal models' deductions have resulted in a more significant comprehension of cellular and molecular mechanisms that lead to neurological dysfunction and brain cell degeneration.
