The rational model is a step by step procedure that seeks to find the best solution to a problem. This particular model seeks to streamline the planning process by making it “rational and systematic as possible” (Levy, 433). The steps are sequential, but often, upon review and analysis, it is possible to go back to a previous step to ensure optimum results are attained. Some of the strengths of the rational model include the possibility of revisiting previous steps. There can never be an optimum or the best solution to a problem. However, the rational model offers the opportunity to rethink certain decisions and to opt for better ones. Secondly, the sequential steps are advantageous as they ensure order during the planning process. However, the rational model has a few weaknesses that critics believe reduce its credibility.
