Elephant Population Proposal
Elephants are among the big five animals in Africa. The two main types of elephants living in Africa are the African forests elephants and the African savanna elephants. As their names indicate, one dwells in thick forests and grassy plains. However, the number of elephants in Africa has been radically reducing over the past two decades. Scientists, ecologists, and biologists across the globe have noted that the number is dwindling compared to past historical population numbers. The ecosystems and biomes related to the animal have been affected. Multiple factors have led to the decline of the elephant population in Africa, such as habitat loss, illegal poaching, and conflicts with humans. An ecosystem refers to a community of living and non-living creatures found within the same area where they dwell and interact. It contains a wide range of interactions within and between biological systems. A savanna is an example of an ecosystem that comprises organisms like animals and plants and water sources, soil, and other abiotic elements of the environment.
On the flip side, a biome is a community of plants and animals that naturally occur in an area sharing the standard features of the region. It is a particular geographic region notable for the creatures living in it. A biome can comprise several ecosystems. For instance, the aquatic biomes ecosystem contains coral reefs and kelp forests. Aquatic biomes are areas of life that occur in water, either freshwater or marine life. Freshwater biomes are regions that hold water with salt concentration below 0.01%. Freshwater biomes occupy less than 1% of the earth and contain 6% of entire earth species. Marine biomes are aquatic biomes with a salt concentration of 3% (STE, 2015). The biome covers a significant amount of the earth’s surface and has a few different subdivisions, such as the photic zone, intertidal zone, and aphotic zone. Each sub-division hosts various life forms suitable for that specific biome. The life forms are different but connected by the levels of light penetrating to the other depths of water.
Additionally, terrestrial biomes consist of land and are classified mainly by the type of vegetation. The biomes highly depend on climate, with the two significant factors being rainfall and temperature. The two factors are the main determinants of the specific location of terrestrial biomes. The terrestrial biomes are the central region where elephants live, particularly the savannas. Many large grazing mammals live in the biome since it has scattered trees and is predominated by grass. Also, it experiences little rain and has a warm temperature.
