Biodiversity Loss and Impact on Food Security

Readings: Chapter 19 Population and Community Ecology (pages 499-528), Chapter 20 Ecosystems and the Biosphere (pages 529-566), and Chapter 21 Conservation and Biodiversity (pages 567-592).
Objective: Identify impact of loss of biodiversity on humans.
Hello everyone,
Our readings for this week discuss the importance of ecology on populations. The natural environment does influence the wellbeing of human populations and vice versa. We hear of media reports of how the climate is changing and its potential effect on human life. But what about other life such as animal and plant? Ecologists study these populations in order to preserve and protect because they affect human life. Very frequently, we hear about a animal species in danger or a change in plant life such as the Amazon rainforest. During summer of 2006, I was part of a graduate class who studied healthcare access in the Amazon rainforest of South America. I learned that if the Amazon rainforest goes…. humans will expire with it since there is a direct relationship between plants and animals.
This week we will discuss biodiversity and, more importantly, the impacts of it's loss on human life. I have chosen a report for you to read and then comment on with a single reply to a classmate's post. The attached report link entitled "Ecosystems and Human Well-being. Biodiversity Synthesis" is a international report that covers many topics on biodiversity. Its chief audience are policy experts. I would like you to pay close attention to part 2 "Why is biodiversity loss a concern?" (pages 40-50). The report identifies biodiversity and the many ecosystem services that it provides as a key instrumental and constitutive factor determining human well-being. The findings support, with high certainty, that biodiversity loss and deteriorating ecosystem services contribute—directly or indirectly—to worsening health, higher food insecurity, increasing vulnerability, lower material wealth, worsening social relations, and less freedom for choice and action. The concerns on humans include: Food Security, Vulnerability, Health, Social Relations, Energy Security, Provision for Clean Water, Freedom of Choice and Action, and Basic Materials for a Good Life and Sustainable Livelihoods.
