Stem cells are unique human cells capable of dividing and forming numerous distinct cells, for example, muscle cells, bone cells, and brain cells (Hu & Shan, 2016). Stem cells come in two different types, which are embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells develop from pluripotent blastocysts; hence, capable of dividing into more stem cells (Zakrzewski et al., 2019). Their versatility enables them to be used in regenerating or repairing damaged tissues and organs. Adult stem cells are differentiated into two types. The first type results from completely developed tissues, for example, the skin, and are in small numbers. These stem cells are only capable of generating specific types of cells. For instance, cells generated from the brain can only produce more brain cells. The second type of adult stem cells comes from pluripotent stem cells, modified in a laboratory to resemble embryonic stem cells.
Stem cells are located in all organs but are abundant in the bone marrow (Chahla et al., 2017). Stem cells found in the bone marrow serve the main purpose of restoring the blood and immune system. Stem cells are often collected by temporarily extracting blood from the body and sorting out the stem cells through a cell-separator machine, after which the blood is returned to the b...
