The 1800s had some great artists who had a completely new outlook on art. The artist embraced new styles of art that they believed was beautiful. They created an impressionist movement that influenced the western world tremendously. This essay will compare the works such as “Niagara” by Frederick Edwin Church, “The View of the Catskills”, and the “View of Mt. Holyoke, The Oxbow” by Thomas Cole.
Frederick Church created the oil on canvas piece “Niagara” to represent the American Landscape in 1857. The painter shows a panoramic view of the falls from the Canadian side. The work’s texture gives the viewer an impressive look at the water, highlighting the beautiful drop in the cloudy mist and streams of water in a variety of color mix of white, green, and yellow (Cameron, 2019). The white gives a transition and movement of water. A floating tree trunk is a foreground object that offers a sense of scale. The work provides ambiguity and highlights of imminent danger of being at the fall’s edge. With unprecedented realism, the painter captures the effect of turbulent water and mist, and the light produces a small rainbow whose arch is vital where the mist is thick. The work is highly realistic as it gives a mixture of light, color, and texture.
“The View on the Catskill, Early Autumn” is a work done in 1833 by Thomas Cole. It is an oil on canvas piece that the artist highlighter crags, mountains, and verdant valleys surrounding the Hudson River in New York (Coleman, 2018).
