Dehydration is a deficiency of water balance in the body. It occurs when the body lacks enough water to function correctly. The body uses water to regulate temperature, carry nutrients and oxygen to cells, eliminate waste products, lubricate joints, prevent infections, moisten tissues in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and keep organs functioning correctly (Armstrong et al., 2016). Due to water imbalance, the body cannot perform its normal functions. Excessive sweating, vomiting, increased urination, diarrhea, and the use of diuretics cause this condition (Healthline, n.d). Its severity depends on the quantity of water missing from the body. Mild or moderate symptoms include thirst, dark yellow urine, muscle cramps, and sticky mouth (Khatri, 2019). Severe symptoms include dizziness, rapid breathing, very dark yellow pee, sunken eyes, fainting, and irritability. Dehydration can also lead to other severe complications like kidney problems, hypovolemic shock, and seizures.
