The mosque is an Islamic symbolism, and it represents both the religion and the originators of the religion. The religion originated from the Arab world, and it spread across the globe to different parts. The mosque is a work of art that brings together a set of artistic features in its architectural design. Due to this reason, mosques are similar across the globe, and they usually feature a dome at the top. The dome symbolizes the universe, and it is usually hollow on the inside (Blair & Bloom, 2012). This allows air to circulate, particularly in the hot countries from where the religion originated. It also allows for the amplification of the voices of the faithful. Probably, the symbolism is the idea of having the voices of prayers heard globally. The dome usually has a minaret on one of its sides. From this tower (the minaret), the sound of the calls to Allah emerges from the general prayer hall. Usually, the voice that comes out of the tower is that of the leader in prayers, and it is tall as a way of trying to reach as close to Allah as possible (Blair & Bloom, 2012).
The other features above the dome are usually the star and the crescent. The star has five points that are a reflection of the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars are central to the Islamic faith. The crescent moon symbol surrounds the star to symbolize the light that shines over Islam even in darkness.
