Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Maximum 10-minute presentation (upload a 6-slide (minimum) Powerpoint
The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to understand and communicate how the presentation of an online museum collection reflects a specific narrative about Islamic art. Each student is randomly allocated a website to work with from the list provided in your course resources module. Please note that each museum website has a different way of presenting the collection.
You are required to:
* Explore the website allocated to you and explain its narrative by discussing its language (names, terms, …) and structure (pathways, depth, …).
* Website: https://collections(dot)rom(dot)on(dot)ca/
* Your presentation should have a front page/slide or a title indicating your name and the name of the collection, be at least 6 slides – and no more than 12 slides.
* Listen to (Intro to the David Collection Website mp4) and explore the example of the David Collection, Denmark https://www(dot)davidmus(dot)dk/en/collections/islamic (Links to an external site.)
posted on the course resources module which provides a description on how to navigate a site and the different pathways and classifications under which a collection is presented.
* Compare your allocated website to the David collection in your final slide (optional).
* Provide the basic information about the museum allocated to you (when available) such as museum mission, name of the gallery where Islamic art is exhibited, aim of the gallery, when it was installed the last time, number of objects, …). You may find this information on the museum/gallery website. Please remember that museums do not always provide the same information.
* Incorporate analysis and references from one of the assigned readings or viewings (from weeks one and two) that demonstrate your understanding of the arguments in these narratives.
* Explain the narrative and presentation of the gallery/museum focusing on:
* How do they define Islamic art?
* How do they present and organize their exhibited collection (either the in-gallery collection or on-line)?
* What information do they provide about it? How deep do they go (tombstone, extended caption, catalogue entry, … see museum index in Course Resources)
* What is the overall narrative of the gallery (Is there an overall story? what is the story/stories they are telling)?
* Are the organization of the objects and the name of the museum/gallery connected?
 A good assignment will:
Include a description and interpretation of the museums/galleries with full references (include links). Incorporate analysis and references from the assigned reading/viewing that demonstrate your understanding of the arguments in these narratives. Be 6-12 powerpoint slides with recoded comments or an mp4 recording.
 Assignment Checklist:
* Check the formatting of the images (images should be downloaded from the museum website and inserted in the document (using Insert/Picture from file) to avoid any image distortion). See Image Sizing PDF from course resources.
* Images should have captions stating what the image is and they should be fully referenced. In addition, if you get an image from a website, include source (link/URL).

* The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), founded in 1914, is a research and cultural center that boasts of a collection of over six million items in 40 galleries of artifacts collected from the planet (Royal Ontario Museum, n.d).
* The ROM website language is formal, with short sentences giving the necessary information about the museum and its work.
* When it comes to the pieces on display, the museum mostly focuses on simple descriptions of the items, which do not tell a story behind the items, and there is no connection between the pieces.
* The museum's mission is to advance the understanding of arts, nature, and culture from the globe. Apart from preserving and collecting art and culture, the museum aims to be one of the world’s foremost 21st century cultural institutions.
Slide 2
* The David Collection was founded by an art collector based in Denmark established in 1948 (The David Collection, n.d.). The collections are in three categories of Islamic, European, and Danish art collections. The David collection has a collection of the largest Islamic art in Northern Europe.
* The collection at the David Collection contains works from almost all Islamic cultures from the 7th to the 19th century.
* Though the gallery is about Islamic art, the texts on the items are written in reference to the Christian calendar (The David Collection n.d). This iterates Shalem's idea about the Westernization of Islamic art by the West (2012).
Slide 3
* The Royal Ontario Museum does not have a dedicated Islamic collection similar to the Davidson Collection. The galleries are instead categorized into two categories of history and culture.
* Under each of these categories, different galleries display items tagged as Islamic art. In the ROM online gallery, the items tagged Islamic art are 2074 pieces scattered in different galleries (ROM Collections, n,d).
* In its academic core, Islamic art focuses on Muslim artists' art for strictly Muslim population (Blair & Bloom, 2003). However, Islamic art can also be defined as art created over centuries in a large geographic area of North Africa to Asia.
Slide 4
* The galleries that display Islamic art category in the ROM museum are the Wirth Gallery of the Middle East, Ajmera Gallery of Africa, the Americas and Asia pacific, Galleries of Africa: Nubia, Galleries of Africa: Egypt, and the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Gallery of Rome and the near East.
* The Wirth Gallery of Middle East features 1000 items from the Middle East that stretch from Iraq to Iran (Wirth Gallery of Middle East, n.d).
* When it comes to exhibitions, there was one recent exhibition titles Islamic art, Cairo under wrap: Early Islamic textiles that ran from June 2014 to January 2015 (Royal Ontario Museum, 2014). The exhibition, which was part of the centenary celebration of the ROM, featured only textile items and featured over 80 items from the 7th to the 14th centuries.
Slide 5
* Since there is no dedicated gallery to Islamic art, there is no definition from the museum on Islamic art on the ROM website. By definition, Islamic art spans ...
