Lalaland: Film Analysis
Introduction
Damien Chazelle has won Best Achievement in Directing and is the youngest recipient of this achievement. He has written and directed the 2016 American romance musical, La La Land, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling (“La La Land”). La La Land is a beautiful film about Mia's life and dreams, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, a jazz pianist who wants to put up his jazz club. After weird coincidental encounters and playful mockery, the two falls in love in Los Angeles and, during the pursuit of their dreams, are faced with crossroads, pushing both Mia and Sebastian to choose which path to take. This is not the typical cute fairytale romance seen in many films. There are many notable and moving scenes in La La Land, but in this film analysis, the chance encounter of the strangers, Mia and Sebastian, at Sebastian's workplace will be discussed in particular. In this scene, Mia sees Sebastian get lost in playing his jazz music instead of the set Christmas playlist assigned to him by the restaurant’s manager. The night does not end well, and their encounter ends up in rude behavior from Sebastian. This is a mise en scene because of the meaningful picture provided to the audience, which proves to be vital in building the film's narrative. In Mia and Sebastian's scene at the restaurant, Sebastian’s passion for playing jazz music is seen, and a connection between Mia and Sebastian is formed demonstrated to the audience through great strategic cinematography and production design.
Summary
The scene starts with Sebastian, seated in front of the piano and looking around the restaurant. He looks miserable while trying to comply by playing the assigned playlist, but he suddenly starts playing a beautiful jazz ballad and gets engrossed with his music. Sebastian finishes playing his jazz music with evident frustration and intense emotions and stands up seeing the amazed Mia watching by the restaurant's entrance. Soon after, Sebastian was called by the restaurant manager and is fired from his job because of his disobedience. He tried to persuade him to keep his job, mostly because it is Christmas, but the manager did not give in. As Sebastian was gathering his things from the piano and leaving, Mia started walking towards him, and when she was about to say something, Sebastian just rudely walked past her, leaving Mia shocked with the kind of behavior Sebastian had demonstrated.
The scene establishes Sebastian's focus and passion, which is playing the piano and producing legendary jazz music. Moreover, the effect of his performance becomes an inspiration and an eye-opener of what they truly want and dream of in life. There is an excellent emphasis on Sebastian’s simple character but not wanting to conform to what others are telling him to do, and in this scene, it was the restaurant manager. It is also worth noting that this specific scene is repeated towards the end of the film but with few changes, somehow implying that the start of Mia and Sebastian’s connection started in this scene.
In addition to this, the scene is particular...
