Catskill Mountain Landscape
Thomas Cole's Catskill Mountain Landscape( 1826) painting depicts a mountain range at dawn just when the morning lights burn off the fog in the distance. Near the foreground, a small lone figure dressed in red gazes at a dead tree that is dramatically sunlit. In the portrait, Thomas used the portrait scale illusion to depict that humans were not superior to nature. While observing the picture, one would see and feel the effect of moving air and the need for environmental justice.
Notably, to analyze a painting, an individual has to think about what the painter intended to portray and the technique they used, which was adequate. Cole, in his work, is portrayed as an environmentalist. He is best described as using nature sketches and transforming them into a painting that communicates his sentiments and advocacy.
