Diego Rivera is considered the most visible figure in the history of Mexican muralism; this was a large-scale public art initiative that became common during the 1920s during the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. He was also known for his famous painting, with some reflecting some of the social issues affecting the community such as forced labor. One of his most famous pieces that I have come across is The Mathematician, which he did in 1918. I like every aspect of this work, especially how different elements of art have been used. It has helped me to understand how the elements are used in art.
The piece of work by the artist is The Mathematician: 1918. This art is an example of fine art. The artist worked in a symbolic style by creating works with coherent and consistent characteristics as shown in some of his works. The initial reaction that I get from this is that Rivera was excellent at symbolism and imagery. Again, I like how he uses expressionism showing the mood of most of the community members during this time. It also shows how desperate some people had become due to challenges.
The initial reaction to this work is that Diego Rivera was talented. It is evident that he used this picture to show some of his social habits such as drinking and smoking. The style used in this work is expressionism. This is because Diego Rivera does not reproduce the subject accurately. Instead, he chooses to portray it in such a way that expresses his inner state. In this case, he shows he was in deep thought, maybe carried away in worries about his social life. In this case, I like the fact that feelings and mood can be expressed through art. In this case, the artist has used different aspects of art such as line and curves to ensure that the emotions are communicated as intended. Therefore, this has enabled me to understand how I can use different aspects of artwork to communicate ideas and feelings.
I have realized that there are various elements of art that Rivera utilizes. One of such is line. I have noticed that he uses two-dimensional lines in making his paintings. He also uses shape, and his art is two dimensional, giving it a definite shape that makes them attractive (Mesch 207). Additionally, Rivera uses form. This helps me to understand how these elements are used to ensure that the artwork communicated the intended message. It is evident in how heights and widths are enclosed to form the paintings.
