Nursing As Art and Science
Art and science are two subjects that play a significant role in shaping nursing practice. Each of the subjects has specific methods that are relevant to the nursing practice (Peplau, 1988). Understanding the roles that each of these subjects plays in nursing practice is instrumental in understanding the complex questions that relate to nursing practice.
Science as a subject deals with investigations, experimentations, and analysis geared towards establishing the relationship between different concepts. Research is all about discovering new phenomena or demonstrating concepts or connections between different that were previously not known. Nursing is a science because it deals with exploring and understanding the characteristics of various diseases (Gustafsson, 2002). Like science, which involves monitoring an experiment to establish a trend, and use the findings of the observation process to conclude, nursing also consists of monitoring patients and using the results drawn from the process to create solutions. Therefore, since nursing follows the patch of science in its conduct, it is a science.
