Balthus, “The Guitar Lesson, 1934”
The Balthus current critic and friends' works make the Guitar Lessons and La Lesson de Guitare one of the most renowned yet least addressed art. No music is being played in the scene shown since the instruction has evolved into a sexual initiation ceremony (Rewald, 2014). The work has been silenced by most of Balthus' writers and poet pals. Certain commentators see the work as modeled on the Pieta of the Louvre, presumably the pieta of Villeneuve-Les-Avignon from the mid-15th century, to evaluate the figures from almost the same height and similar proportions. Balthus portrays a female music instructor holding a little girl between her legs in place of the toy-like musical instrument left on the floor in the Guitar Lesson.
The youngster is not trying to fight. She's arching, and her stance evokes the images in a Pieta portrayed in the Virgin Mary's lap. Your teacher's hands are placed on the guitar girl: one near her inner leg and another holding the little girl's hair (Rewald, 2014). The picture remains highly controversial, as some spectators or even critics perceive a brutal scene of sexual assault and the feminine body of very young girls. However, some still love that composition, figures, and the representation of still naive and hideous sensuality. One may remark that the delicacy and posture of the characters imply a relatively innocent play, except for some apparent manner of reading the situations of the picture as aggressive. Those paintings all remind the art public why art is sometimes used to make the spectators watch and think, remember, and interpret very subjectively what they view in the painting. Like certain of the old masters, objects or symbols were hidden in the pictures to cause the viewer's imagination.
