China's history is described by short periods of different rulers, in China different regions were ruled by different groups of people referred to as dynasties. The Ming Dynasty ruled China from 1368 to 1644 during the first half of the 15th century. The Ming dynasty saw the emergence of technological and other advances that re-established native Chinese ruling which imposed specific styles of art.
The early Ming dynasty is known to be a period of cultural renovation and growth; artists were instructed to present artist expression that favored images that glorified the new dynasty, conveying its generosity, merits, and its magnificence. The early Ming decorative arts represented the rich and diverse heritage of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty that incorporated both chances tradition and foreign influences. Many of these artistic expressions are present in Gallery 204 at The Met Fifth Avenue.
The gallery displays contain Chinese ceramics including a jar with dragon paintings of cobalt blue with a porcelain body that represents one of the most important developments in the history of ceramics. According to Chinese history, the jar was produced for the court and was an impressive storage jar. The picture is an example of the many Chinese wares from Jingdezhen during the rule of Xuande emperor, based on the inscriptions on the jar.
