Final Essay- Your final essay is a critical assessment of the nature of artists and art workshops in the pre-modern Muslim world. It is based on your understanding of the lectures and assignments for the course and the assignments you submitted throughout the course. The essay will serve as the introduction to your album. You will submit your full album including the 1000-1100 words essay on US letter paper.
 A Karkhana Album: Creating an Album of a Karkhana (Painting Workshop) that demonstrates your understanding of the collaborative nature of an artist workshop and the role and biographies of individual artists from the pre-modern Muslim world. During this course you will be working towards creating an album similar to the types of albums created in the pre-modern Muslim world. These albums traditionally included notes, and collages or single-page compositions of calligraphy, illumination, paintings (photographs, or your own drawings), samples and short biographies of the work of specific artists/calligraphers, and an introduction (your final essay). Final Essay (due November 29)Your final essay is a critical assessment of the nature of artists and art workshops in the pre-modern Muslim world. It is based on your understanding of the lectures and assignments for the course. The essay is between 1000-1100 words in length. Specific requirements:1. The essay will be an introduction to your album and will reflect your learning and understanding of the collaborative nature of the workshop and artist signatures. You will submit your album (work throughout the term) along with your essay in a single folder or album format.2. The essay will include references from at least 3 articles from the assigned readings in the syllabus in addition to one of the following two articles:• Wheeler Thackston, “Arzadasht”, Album Prefaces and Other Documents on the History of Calligraphers and Painters(Leiden, Boston, Köln, 2001), pp. 43–6.• Wheeler Thackston, “The Bahram Mirza Album Preface by Dost-Muhammad”, in Album Prefaces and Other Documents on the History of Calligraphers and Painters(Brill, 2001), pp. 4-21.3. The essay is between 1000-1100 words in length (excluding captions and references)4. The essay can have images (optional). All images should have full captions, including urls.5. The references should be either Chicago or MLS style6. You will submit a hard copy of the full album in class on Friday 29th at 3:00 pm.

In composing the album, the artistic compositions are based on the subject, content and period where the work was undertaken. The works of important practitioners is often found in more than one album where contextualization of the albums necessitated the inclusion of such works even as patrons and collectors influenced what appeared in the album, this partly depended on the artists and availability of the works. In Mughal courtly production, paintings were more likely to be commissioned than other art works, and paintings from the era are also found in different albums. In the album, there is focus on calligraphy, illumination and paintings to reflect he works of different artists and calligraphers.
The first assignment focused on the different works of art from the Chester Beatty Library highlighting how different artists interpreted the world and what they chose to depict. In the image “the Abbasid Caliph Ma’mun at the Hamman by Mughal Emperor Akbar” in 1529, there were gradual changes in Islamic art where more figures were shown and there is distance between the images more than was shown in previous images. different empires promoted art and calligraphy still retained an important place in art This artwork contrasts with European such as Knight, Death and the Devil by Albert Dürer that was 1513 engraving where the German artists focuses on naturalism surfaces and there is depiction of a Christian knight is one of God’s soldiers.
Arabic writing moves horizontally from right to left with interruptions only at the end of the words or where these final letters are presented, and different scripts have been used. the Kufic script that was an angular script arose in the late 7th century, while naskh, thuluth, muhaqqaq, rayhan, twaqi’ and riqa’ emerged as proportional calligraphy scripts. Nasta'liq, Diwani emerged from the 15th century and were preferred by Persians and the Ottoman Empire respectively. Albums including woks on calligraphy, paintings and drawings reflect the history and artistic practices, where Arabic calligraphy is an important art form that was closely tied to Islam.Arabic calligraphy learners practiced over a long period of time and experimented how to place different letters indifferent positions and to organize writing on pages.
