Research Proposal Analysis: Strengths and Weaknesses of the Research Question

Coursework Instructions:

Analyze your two instructor-assigned research proposals.  Develop a short response (approximately 300 words) describing the strengths and weaknesses of the research question/thesis in each assigned sample.

Remember! This is an analysis, NOT a summary. Be specific about strengths and weaknesses. Required: 300 words, total, and Endnote Citations are required to support your position.

Endnote Citations:   See the AU Style Guide Appendix A.

For example, in Lesson 1, you are directed to analyze the research question/thesis of your assigned PAPER. "Thesis" here means the position of the paper, which is based on the research question to be answered. So, cover both the research question and thesis in your analysis.  In my mind, the simplest explanation of a thesis: it is a proposed answer to the research question.

Example research question (VERY simplified):  How would the AF best leverage the F-15 in future wars?

Example thesis:  The AF can best leverage the F-15 in future wars by making the wings out of carbon fiber, giving it 3.5 warp speed capability, including photon torpedoes, and making the pilot lose 75 pounds.  This would result in a stronger, faster, deadlier, and skinnier weapons platform that can best take on the Klingon enemy.

Back to reality: attached, please find the names of the TWO papers/proposals you will analyze for the weekly lessons. You will have the same two papers/proposals for each assignment related to the review of papers (Lessons 1 and 4) and the same two proposals for each of those assignments (3, 5, and 7)

To keep it simple, I recommend the following template for your analysis of Papers/Proposals. Remember, 300 words total in one post with one endnote list at the end of the document.

1st Author's Name, Title of Paper or Proposal, Research Question

Strengths:
Weaknesses:

150 total words of analysis. Title of paper, author's name, etc., are NOT included in the word count.

2nd Author's Name, Title of Paper or Proposal, Research Question

Strengths:
Weaknesses:

150 total words of analysis. Title of paper, author's name, etc., are NOT included in the word count.

Grand Total = 300 words. You can go over, but no less.

Research Proposal Analysis
Auger, Understanding Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), What actions should AFSOC take regarding RPAs in order to take advantage of their strengths while mitigating their weaknesses?
Strengths
Auger's research question is focused on a specific problem that affects the Air Force. Specifically, the research question is clearly tied to the central problem identified in the proposal. The central problem involves ensuring that the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) remains informed about RPAs (Auger 2012, 1). In addition, the research question is arguable because it cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. It is an open-ended question that leaves room for investigation, creating more insights into the problem and potential solutions. The research question is also researchable. Auger uses a variety of credible sources, such as government websites, books, and research reports to support his argument on the issue, as evidenced by his bibliography (Auger 2012, 36-37). Since the research question is researchable, it is easy to identify solutions to the problem.[Kevin Auger, “Understanding Remotely Piloted Aircraft,” Research Report, (Air University, 2012).] [Auger, “Understanding Remotely Piloted Aircraft.]
Weaknesses
The main weakness of the research question and thesis statement is that although the research question is clear, the thesis does not provide clear answers. The paper's thesis states that AFSOC commanders “must understand” RPAs (Auger 2012, 2) but does not clearly explain how that under...
