“The sweet memories of home have gone’: displaced people searching for home in a liminal space.”
The thesis of the paper is that people who have been displaced from their homes find it challenging to accept new areas as their home. These paces lack the sense of being called a home. Many people who have been displaced from their homes spend their time moving from one place to another. They only consider themselves living in a liminal space that cannot be transformed into a home. It is the affection and sense of belonging that makes a place a home. Therefore, if that sense of belonging is not present, it will be difficult for immigrants to make a new home. A lot of immigrants try hard to create the affection and sense of a home to no success. The only place they consider home is their original areas of stay where they have been displaced (Perez Murcia).
The paper relates to international migration by showing how challenging it is for immigrants to adapt to their environments. These migrants can spend their life in a new location, but it will never be compared to a home because it lacks a sense of belonging. There are many materials and symbolic impacts of living in an area that people cannot call home. People can be provided with all the necessities they need to call the new location a home but will not qualify to be a home similar to what they left behind. The new homes create a sense of being trapped in a new environment that does not offer people the comfort they need to feel at home. In most cases, it takes people a long period to adjust to their new setting. Other people never consider new locations to be their home. The question arising from this discussion is whether immigrants can get used to having new homes in the long run.

The article focuses on self-organized strategies for housing immigrants in Europe. The vacant lands and building provide a perfect home for the squatters than the humanitarian bodies and government-provided shelters. The squatted homes in Europe are being considered as a corridor of solidarity. In these homes, grassroots social movements collaborate with immigrants to eliminate racism and authoritarian politics. They also eliminate the violence of border regimes, thus creating a safe home for the immigrants. Such is in contrast to the humanitarian and government shelters, which are considered tools of authoritarian politics.
