According to Bruce Tuckman, a psychologist, the five primary phases of group development include forming, norming, storming, adjourning, and performing (Zoltan & Vancea, 2016). In the forming stage, members are introduced to each other, which is followed by storming where individuals’ personalities clash and the initial excitement has worn off. Norming is the stage where team members start to appreciate one another’s abilities while performing entails focusing on the project at hand. Adjourning involves terminating the team when the task is completed.
The three primary characteristics of effective teams include open communication, collaboration, and a clear direction (Schoultz, 2017). The phases of team development significantly affects the above features of an effective group. For example, during the formation stage, members must understand the primary objective or the direction of the team so that they can prepare to achieve outstanding results.
Before team members understand one another, they ought to have conflicts, which is likely experienced in the storming phase.
