“The Language of the Brag” is a feminist poem by Sharon Olds which speaks to the achievements of women living in a misogynistic world and celebrates their sexuality and femininity. Imagery is one of the most employed poetic device: the poet uses vivid and somewhat grotesque imagery to illustrate the experiences of women, particularly the act of giving life, which she prides in and compares to the physical accomplishments of men. The poem begins by figuratively describing the poet’s fantasy of excelling in knife-throwing, an activity that is generally sexist and male dominated.
