1984 George Orwell Character Analysis
George Orwell’s novel titled 1984 was published in the year 1949. This means its title "1984" depicts an envisioned future society. The novel contains several characters, including Winston Smith as the protagonist in then novel. Winston Smith is a contemplative, frail, intellectual, and thin 39-year-old member of the ruling Party. He plays the central role around which other things and characters oscillate. Winston Smith hates the enforced repression as well as totalitarianism control that characterize his government. Winston is not only physically pale but also looks older than his age. This research paper seeks to examine the change or growth of Winston Smith throughout the novel, Nineteen-eight-four.
Change or Growth of Winston Smith
The primary goal of George Orwell in his 1984 novel was to demonstrate the existence of totalitarianism in his envisioned society. As such, Winston Smith acts as the central role character through which the reader experiences a totalitarianism society. Smith’s intellectual ability as well as enables him to see clearly the repressive acts of his government. In fact, Winston can be taken to be an average guy in the novel. He works in the Ministry of Truth’s Records Department. He smokes and also drinks. Although Winston is the main character, he is initially portrayed in an un-heroic manner at the beginning of the novel. Additionally, he does not achieve the heroic status at the end of the novel probably because of his behavior.
At the beginning of the novel, Winston’s appearance is contrary to the appearance of a hero. This is because he is portrayed as a frail and small, with an ulcer on his leg. The implication of this is that Winston is generally physically unfit. Particularly, he cannot ascend the stairs without difficulties. George Orwell might have portrayed Winston this way so that the reader can identify with him as the ordinary average guy. However, it is worth noting that looks can be deceiving. Moreover, a character cannot be classified as a hero or not based on his or her physical appearance. As such, the importance of Winston lies in his actions and not his physical appearance.
Winston’s job involves rewriting the truth by replacing the historical occurrences with something different. Although Winston enjoys performing his work, he is nonetheless worried about the rewriting of the history. Thus, he intends to know the true historical events. However, Winston does not seem to be doing anything sensible like keeping personal records of the events. When Winston started writing in his personal diary, his writings are contemptible, repellant, and absurd. This is poor stuff considering that he earns his living through writing.
