The high-price of legal assistance charged by lawyers has resulted in justice gap whereby poor, low-income people and some middle-income individuals are not able to afford lawyers. It is reported that 80% to 90% of low-income persons in America who have civil legal problems do not receive help from an attorney. As such, there are expanding roles for non-lawyers who have legal training in response to the justice gap. One example in which a non-lawyer who has obtained legal training could apply his or her legal training to his/her career in an ethical and lawful way is by dispensing legal assistance or information expertly. The non-lawyer can help clients in performing legal research and preparing court documents. The trained and licensed non-lawyer may also offer certain specified services for a fee, for instance helping clients in completing court forms, gathering documents and facts, and explaining procedures. However, the non-lawyer, who is also referred to as a legal technician, is not permitted to take part in court hearings.
Instead of earning an expensive degree in law, a candidate takes roughly 12 months of classes at a community college. The candidate then takes a licensing examination. After being licensed, the non-lawyer who has obtained legal training can provide legal services especially to the poor.
