What are some of the limitations of the traditional hierarchical structure, and how do they impact the other levels within the hierarchy?
Traditional hierarchical structures have complex chains of commands characterized by the interconnectedness of work within the organizational units. In this regard, corporate guidelines are delegated from chief executive officers to the various departmental managers who channel them to their subordinate staff. Such complex command levels leads to slow decision-making processes because subordinate teams have to consult and wait for guidance from their seniors before making any decision within the organization. Traditional hierarchical structures are characterized by negative centralization and decentralization of power. With respect to centralization aspects, workers have limited decision-making as the power is vested in their managers.
