Q 1. Rational cost-benefit analysis
The rational cost-benefit analysis of crime is an interventional measure towards the prevention of crime that thrives on the evaluation of some of the primary elements of criminal activities and their subsequent effects on the perpetrators. In essence, rational cost-benefit analysis is a framework for the analysis of criminal activities against the punishment for committing the same (Dye, pg. 95). The crime prevention approach focuses or rather emphasizes on the analysis of the factors or reasons for the commission of a crime, and the merits and demerits of imposing punishments for the crimes committed. The severity of the punishments imposed for crimes committed is further dependent on the rational analysis of their impact on deterring the perpetrator from repeating such offenses. It is for this outlined reason that the United States’ criminal justice system is deemed rational and hence characterized by a lack of certainty and swiftness in punishing criminal offenses (Dye, pg. 95).
The rational approach is further characterized by uncertainty in the severity of punishments imposed on offenders. Nevertheless, the implications of embracing the rational cost-benefit analysis of crime functions deter crime as the execution of its outlined elements towards determining the appropriate punishment exposes potential offenders to a wide range of invasion to their privacy and limitation of their rights and freedom. One of the barriers to the implementation of the rational cost-benefit analysis in the prevention of crime is the lack of an effective system of reporting and recording criminal offenses. A majority of the criminal offenses committed in the United States are not reported to the police and thus limiting the implementation of the rational approach in deterring crime. Failure to report criminal offenses allows the approach to let go of criminal offenders with irrational or lenient punitive measures as their past criminal activities are not in the records of the justice system.
