Interview about the Civil Rights Era
In my recent interview with one Chinese American citizen who lived during the Civil Rights Era in America and remembers the Memphis Strike, shared her experience. Below are the detailed contents of the interview.
1.Background of the interviewee
My name if Mrs. Wong, I was born in China in 1949 in a small village in Tianjin Municipality. Tianjin is a northern coastal town. My parents migrated to the US when the Chinese civil war was almost ending. I am a Christian. I studied in America and attained my degree in sociology I have worked within the welfare department in the US. I was the only child I have no siblings. I got married after college, and I have two sons. I am not affiliated with any political party.
2. I can recall how exclusion became the norm; I remember a street where we lived called "Calle de Los Negros" meaning the street of the Dark Hued ones. Chinese were permitted to work as laundrymen, market gardeners, road builders and ranch workers. Being a child of a Chinese immigrant, I had to face everyday discrimination that segregated our living spaces and controlled our geographical mobility.
3. Like many immigrant children, I could not attend white schools. Our schools were not well equipped as the white schools. I felt bad, and I tried asking my parents if something can be done to make us go to the same schools as white children. My parents often reminded me to work .
4. Discrimination was evident in almost all sectors; all immigrants were mistreated by white people. The government was doing little to defend immigrants, especially the blacks. I remember my parent getting lower wages as compared to white workers who worked for the local government in Los Angles. We struggled to make ends meet despite my parents working long hours. I felt bad because I spent most of my time at the community center after school. Constant fights arouse between White workers and Chinese workers because the white blamed Chinese workers for accepting lower wages without complaining. Many Immigrants reacted to such discrimination by moving to other towns where immigrants were treated well. Most Chinese moved to the East coast.
5. Racial disparities were common, I attended a school of mixed races of all minority groups living in the area. White children attended what was known as charter schools. Chartered schools did not admit students from other races. Their system of learning was different compared to ours. The schools well protected we could only see the walls, but were not permitted to cross the road to interact with any students despite the school being opposite our school.
6. I was lucky that later in high school, I atte...
