Dear Ms. Smith:
As a spokesperson for ABC Bottling Company, I was quite interested in the views you expressed about the bottled water industry during your interview last evening with Christiane Amanpour. In general, you have quite accurately described many of the challenges the industry faces. Yet, your comment that ABC Bottling is “among the worst environmental offenders,” raises a significant concern because it is inaccurate and mischaracterizes ABC Co’s exemplary record as a good environmental steward. In fact, as a charter member of the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), we are required to meet performance standards higher than those set by state and federal regulators. Perhaps you would be able to accept an invitation to discuss your concerns, meet some of our senior executives and tour our bottling plant in order to gain a better understanding of ABC Co operations? To that end, my office will be in touch with yours to coordinate a mutually convenient date.
To be sure, the water bottling industry faces many challenges. Pollution is by far the greatest concern within this industry. The water bottling industry relies heavily on recyclable containers but these containers are rarely recycled (Jain, Singh and Susan, 50). A majority of them end up in landfills, thus damaging the environment. Further, plastic bottles are photodegradable, which means they decompose into small fragments that pollute the soil and the waterways (Jain, Singh and Susan, 51).
