Emily Elizabeth Dickson (1830-1886) is one of America’s greatest poet. Her poetry was heavily influenced not just by the metaphysical poets of the 17th century but also by her upbringing in a puritan town which strongly encouraged an orthodox and Calvinist approach to Christianity. Like most poet of her time, Dickson experimented greatly with expression so as to free herself from the conventional restraints. She spoke often from a first person and used the speakers in her poetry to offer a deep reflection of the inescapable limitations in her society. she created in her writing an elliptical language that expressed what was possible in her society but was not yet realized.
