The Black Vernacular
The play Fences by August Wilson in his book, focuses on the use of the black vernacular in different situations and concepts. The fences in the play are the emotions of Troy, the father, who is ready to protect his family from evil. The fence to Rose, his wife, was of love towards her family, and to Cory, their son, the fence kept him from achieving his goals. They refer to keeping people in or outside some circumstances, just as Troy’s friend Rono had stated. Wilson, in the Fences passed on the message of suffering. His use of black vernacular speech with the characters brings out the real picture of what happened during the times and how the lack of achievement of goals by that previous generation affected the next generation.
