Discussion about Christianization

Coursework Instructions:

1.
Eventually, all the Scandinavian peoples became Christians. Select multiple contrasting examples and describe how the people became Christians. What methods of conversion worked best? Which were less successful? Who were the best and worst missionaries? (Hint: Each post doesn't have to discuss multiple examples, but the final thread should cover the full range of sources.)
2.
Discuss the discovery of Vinland, the westernmost point of the Viking diaspora, and the attempts to settle there. How was Vinland discovered? Was the discoverer Bjarni Herjolfson or Leif Eirikson? Why did the Greenlanders want to go to Vinland? Why did attempts to settle Vinland fail? Why was Leif Eirikson called Leif the Lucky? Where was Vinland and how was the location proven?
3.
he author made a big effort to describe people. This kind of word painting will be popular in literature until the 20th century. It required readers and hearers to create their own image of the characters.
Do you think the descriptions were intended to tell anything about the character other than just what they looked like? Pick an important, or just interesting, character. What is the physical description of the character? What does s/he do in the saga? How do the image and the action track? Are there any descriptions that don't fit the "you can tell a book by its cover" rubric?
Hint: some of the earlier readings might be useful in this thread. And, there are still a lot of pages left to read. Come back to this thread as new characters enter the story.

In Norway, it was another king, Olaf Tryggvason, who around the same time imposed the new religion. In Sweden it took even longer and, despite the fact that around the year 1000 a Christian king, Olof Skötkonung, reigned in this country, paganism remained strong until the early years of the 12th century, after bloody struggles in which many missionaries lost life. In Iceland, the transition to Christianity was accomplished relatively peacefully by the decision of the country’s parliament.

The Norse voyage tales and Viking sagas highlighted that in the late 10th century, Bjarni Herjolfsson discovered Vinland but Leif Erikson explored the area around 1000 after hearing Herjolfsson’s story and he ...
