Fatima Meer
Professor Fatima Meer is one of the women activists who led fight against apartheid in South Africa. She was born in 1928 in Durban to Meer and Rachel Farrel. One of the notable factors that made her the woman she became was the environment she was brought up in where her father was an editor of Indian News which was an activist publication (SAHO). To cover how influential her father was to her, South Africa History Online described him as pouring his love for language, scholarship, religious tolerance and opposition to discrimination to his children. She completed her master's program in sociology at the University of Natal.
Her activism campaigns started early when she was a student primarily because she was surrounded by discrimination as a result of her being Indian and therefore one of the minorities in South Africa. This motivation saw her continue the activism against the then apartheid government through participating in various Natal activities and was a vital element in the formation of the Federation of South African Women (FedSaw). She was also a teacher lecturing at the University of Natal but her efforts to reach a wider context through her publications were halted when she was banned from traveling and writing. Despite her pivotal role in the anti-apartheid voice, she continued to empower communities through education and welfare programs. She is a renowned author and has immense contributions to the empowerment of the minorities like the blacks and Muslims but more in women activism and leadership. She has received different honors and awards for her contributions and has authored many books and articles (Reinecke). She died in 2010 at the age of 81.
