Answer Questions
Answer 1
When Eugene Schieffelin introduced 60 European starlings in New York’s Central Park, having imported them from England, he was not thinking about their long-term consequences. These birds have proved to be a menace in agriculture since they eat almost everything they come across. For instance, a cloud of starlings can feed up to 20 tons of potatoes (Gup 1). Starlings evict other birds such as woodpeckers and bluebirds. They can pose a danger to travel safety if they impound an airplane, crippling the engine. In 1960, they caused an airplane crash that killed 62 people. Starlings cause diseases such as toxoplasmosis and histoplasmosis.
Answer 2
Schieffelin was responsible for releasing about 100 starlings in North America. The individual was a drug manufacturer. The primary objective of Schieffelin was to introduce different types of birds in North America, particularly those mentioned by William Shakespeare (Gup 1).
