What are your initial thoughts on the explosion of possible policies by states in controlling the genetics of the human race when scientists and leaders realized they could impact future generations with certain controls? How can this historical lesson in PH help us as a cautionary example as we continue to pursue human genetic testing and alterations in the ethical questions of discriminating and causing adverse impacts to future generations that will artificially branch the human race away from its natural path while using PH systems and policies? Michael Crichton’s “Why Politicized Science is Dangerous,” portrays how untested and unapproved scientific theories can be detrimental to societies. In particular, some concepts gain the traction of celebrities, politicians, and scientists quickly. The theory of eugenics existed for almost 50 years without being challenged by anyone. In other words, many people believed in this concept and significantly criticized those who opposed it, calling them reactionary, ignorant, and blind-to-reality individuals (Crichton, 2019). When I came across how eugenics theory was implemented, my initial thought was the harm associated with baseless beliefs. Specifically, the theory of eugenics depicts that only individuals with favorable traits were allowed to reproduce. However, those with undesirable personalities were sterilized or killed so that they do not pass those traits to future generations. Indeed, the theory of eugenics fostered inhumane acts.
