What the Discussion Made Me Wonder about
When I see Commander Alexandra Dovers describe his life in the U.S. Navy Reserves and the lovely cold city of Naples, I wonder why a person of his caliber cannot afford to pay bills. Commander Alexandra Dovers asserts that he has not turned on his heat since December because utility bills are too high. Moreover, the Commander alleges that he wears his civilian clothes because his apartment’s temperature averages about 50 to 55 degrees. The average Commander’s total income in the U.S. Navy Reserves is more than $150,000 yearly (Glassdoor 2022). This figure is the median, meaning that Commander Alexandra Dovers could be earning around that salary since he has been in the Navy for more than two years. Averagely, a U.S. household spends about $4,000 annually on the cost of utilities (Kielar 2021), which is cheap compared to the $150,000 annual salary. Also, the Commander has a civilian job and works as a first officer with military C of command; hence this duty adds some money to his salary. If I were Alexandra Dovers working as a commander and having a civilian job, I would pay for bills using the civilian job’s salary and save and invest using the military job’s salary. Alexandra Dovers has a young family comprising his wife and a one-year-old daughter. This household is small, hence might be cheap to maintain since the bills may be for clothing, housing, and food only. Therefore, the Commander should be brave enough to live his life as it comes.
