Command and Control Operations of USAF, Information Operations (IO), and Cyberspace

Coursework Instructions:

Please provide a response to the following 3 answers (A, B, and C) stating if you agree or disagree. Please use sources to support your answer. Please see the assignment attached.

QUESTION A: The command and control hub of air operations is the AOC, and it is heavily reliant on electronic networks to fulfill its mission. This reliance creates both strengths and vulnerabilities. Pick one network-related strength and one vulnerability that characterize AOC operations. For the strength, explain how the COMAFFOR/JFACC may leverage or expand it into opportunity for increased mission success; for the network vulnerability, explain how he/she may mitigate it

QUESTION B: The Lesson 6 narrative states, “The purpose of Information Operations (IO) is to affect cognitive processes in all domains while protecting our own.” Pick the one Information-Related Capability you believe is most important, explain why you believe this is so, and describe how your chosen IRC can be used to affect cognitive processes of an adversary or enemy.

QUESTION C: Is cyberspace a domain? This determination will impact long-range policy concerning cyber operations. Support your answer and link it to the possible effects of long-range cyber policy.

QUESTION A: AGREE
The command and control operations of the United States Air force (USAF) are carried out in a command center (AOC). It circulates time-sensitive information to senior Air Force Commanders and Agencies and monitors data and emergency alert warnings. AOC conducts joint air military operations (JAOC) with the U.S. Navy or the US Marines. It is clear that the AOC’s dependence on technology and electronic networks to complete its missions.[Mihai Iordache, “Air Mission Commander. Command and Control,” Land Forces Academy Review 25, no. 1 (January 2020): pp. 8-14, https://doi.org/10.2478/raft-2020-0002.]
As the question indicates, dependence on electronic networks has benefits and vulnerabilities. The downsides begin with the command and control vulnerability to communications jamming. If the USAF ever faces an ‘elite’ adversary, jamming and cyber warfare could be major operational impediments. Modern operations rely heavily on high-end communications devices. Any vulnerabilities on these devices could lead to lethal consequences or unsuccessful missions. The AOC also primarily operates on private enterprise hardware and software, thus raising concerns that their merchandise can be used against them. The AOC’s ability to determine and interpret real-time threats is leading the network-related strengths. The COMMAFFOR/JFACC has seen massive success in the modern era due to having the upper hand on their adversaries in ISR networks and activities, which execute airborne activities and components planning. The AOC s ability to space domination over her adversaries is mainly dependent on the United States’ ability to dominate the cyber domain.
QUESTION B: DISAGREE
Informations Operations (I.O.) primary objective is to influence the decision-making and actions of adversaries and potential adversaries while protecting your own. These objectives can be achieved by understanding cognitive factors leading to the adversary’s decision-making process. The information-Related Capability (IRC) primary goal is to influence the cognitive dimension and have both lethal and non-lethal consequences.
Counterintelligence (CI) proves to be the mos...
