The first 13 English colonies in North America arrived in three political structures: The New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies, and had different motives for leaving Europe and explore the New World. The New England Colonies consisted of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Middle Colonies comprised of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, while the Southern Colonies settled in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Some colonies such as the Middle Atlantic Colonies had small farming land back at home and had to move expecting to find large parcels of land in America to practice agricultural production of fur, grain, and livestock. Another group had been troubled by the conflicts and upheavals in their homeland that compromised their peace. Therefore, by moving into the New World, they were looking for a quiet and peaceful life. There are others who particularly wanted to become rich by making quick money in America and some who were poor settled to look for jobs. The large majority, however, found it difficult to practice their religion back at home and sought for peace in the New World. This paper will show that while the English settled the original 13 colonies for peace and economic purposes, most of the colonies such as the Maryland Colony, the New Haven Colony, the Rhode Island Colony, and the Dutch Colony came to America for religious reasons.[Joseph Locke and Ben Wright (Eds). Maryland Colony
A large number of kings and queens in Europe were known for forcing their own people to adopt the same religion they practiced, and a majority of settlers entered America trying to find religious freedom. The Maryland Colony is part of the Southern colonies named after Henrietta Maria, the Catholic Queen. This colony was highly religious and had fled Europe as the people could not freely practice their own faith. Cecilius Calvert, a political ally and a friend to Charles 1 who had set aside 12 million acres of land in 1632, brought in a new colony in America. Charles 1, favored Calvert’s plan to create a colony and show that protestants could live peacefully together with Catholics. Calvert had sought for a colony where his fellow Catholics could live peacefully without persecution.
