Geography can help understand some of the important historical events in American history. A number of major events such as the Southern Economy and The Trail of Tears can be attributed to the weather and land features that had greater impacts on the Americans during the period when they occurred. First, during the Civil War, there was a serious conflict of slavery in the south. Slaves were needed to work in cotton plantations and this increased the demand for laborers. The soils and the climate in the south favored the growing of cotton and improved incomes in southern economy that relied on agriculture. For the owners of plantations slavery was a booming economic investment and the slave owners were considered members of the elite class.
