The 1960s began with the election of John F. Kennedy, who was the first American president born in the twentieth century. Many American Youths regarded President Kennedy as the hope for the country. After he was assassinated in 1963, many young people and members of the minority groups perceived it as the end of end of their hopes. A time of hope soon started looking like a period of violence and brutality, this made many people including the youth to start demanding for fair treatment of the black citizens as well as full equality for women. This paper examines the desegregation of public amenities and legislation of civil rights as some of the youth’s concerns that led to their activism.
In the 1960s, a new student movement surfaced and its members demanded swift transformation in the segregated South. This led to the emergence of confrontational protests, boycotts, and sit-ins. Four African Americans students took part in a sit-in at a whites-only lunch counter as an indication of resistance and they refused to leave until they were served. This tactic led to the desegregation of the Woolworth’s department stores. This protest proved that student-led direct activities would help in facilitating and promoting change and also aid in establishing the civil rights movement’s direction in the future.[The American Yawp, 2013. Additionally, activists also participate in interstate bus rides after the Supreme Court outlawing segregation on trains as well as on public buses.
