Women’s Movement and the Struggle for Equality
The women’s movement also famously referred to as the feminist movement consisted of political campaigns that were aimed at addressing most of the trivial issues affecting women and that prevented them from achieving their dreams socially, politically and economically. It had specific goals of helping the women take control of their lives by being given freedom and access to equal opportunities in the same way as the men. The movement pushed for making changes in regards to women’s reproductive rights, sexual violence, equal pay in jobs, maternity leave, domestic violence, the right for women to vote and sexual harassment. In essence, the women’s movement achieved massive success in ensuring the passing of some laws that were specifically meant to offer services related to addressing most of the issues affecting the women.
The series of campaigns carried out by the women’s movement had an overall positive impact. The most notable effect was advancing the opportunities for women in all areas. For instance, women can now work in any profession just like the men, unlike before when there were restrictions about women’s participation in politics or other “masculine” jobs. Equally, great efforts have been made to publicly recognize the legitimacy of issues like reproductive rights, childcare and gender-based violence against women (Epstein). Also, there has been an increase in the general interest in women’s health. Another most important achievement of the women’s movement is that it has led to the recognition and acceptance of gender equality as a necessary tool for development.
