After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. In the South, former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but, despite the Reconstruction period, faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Examine the statement below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

Political policies and movements in the period from 1865 to the 1920s generally promoted diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few. (or you can take the position that they did not). Use specific examples of policies or movements from different decades to support your position.

Following the end of the civil war in 1865, radical reforms were necessary to incorporate the entire citizenship as well as unite both the north and the south. While the political policies and movements between 1865 and 1930 advocated for increased democracy, and diversity in the US, sharp opposition and prejudices by a few made the entire period strenuous and chaotic. Immediately after the end of the civil war, the government was in a hurry to make policies that would promote racial co-existence as a result of the abolishment of the slave trade. Unfortunately, unfavorable political environment promoted vices such as racism, corruption, and unemployment among the freed slaves. The south wanted to maintain ‘the southern way of life,’ a status quo that sought to have slaves continue working in their plantations (Duby, 2005). A populist movement was launched in 1896 aiming at bringing significant changes in the economy. The movement brought about improvement in the economy through improved infrastructure, agriculture, and industry (Boyd, 1896). Improving infrastructure and governance was vital in attaining economic and social equity in the society that was embracing industrialization away from slavery. Additionally, progressive movement was launched between 1890 and 1920 and aimed at addressing social equality and welfare for all members of the society. The progressive movement was critical in establishing a just society that enabled both men and women become empowered in the society through access to education, female suffrage, better working conditions and right to join labor unions and the end to child labor (Schultz, 2013).
