1. If you had the power to change THREE things about music in Toronto to make it a more
liveable, resilient, happy and healthy city, what would you change and why? Refer to material
in at least THREE of the different sources in order to construct your answer. (Hint: Discuss both the
current state of each area of improvement, as well as how and why you would change it.)
2. Music can be said to “construct” Toronto through its relationship to place, cultural identity,
and social relationships. Choose ONE musical example studied in this course to demonstrate
EACH of the above themes (so THREE in total). Discuss how both the context of the example
(i.e., the music culture) as well as the piece itself contributes to our understanding of Toronto.
3. Music is not always a positive force in community development. Discuss THREE examples of
music cultures, communities or practices studied this term through which music is used to bring
Torontonians together at the same time that it excludes and/or alienates – either intentionally
or not – other inhabitants of the city.

One of the things I would do about music in Toronto to make it a more liveable, resilient, happy, and healthy city would be to increase the number of music venues. While Toronto boasts of being home to the world's most culturally diverse population, its music scene fails to reflect the same diversity concerning several festivals, concerts, venues, and performing arts centers. Increasing the number of social spaces promoting multicultural music will allow marginalized communities to showcase their music and cultural identity. The municipal council of Toronto needs to create more venues for local creators across all genres and cultures by availing city spaces in town halls and community centers as performance spaces. Finding locations to hold multicultural performances can be cost-prohibitive for community groups and upcoming artists. These spaces must be accessible throughout Toronto to generate the following required to support local communities of musicians. Some of the societal actors I would push the City to consider partnering with include Catholic District School Boards, Business Improvement Areas (BIAs), and commercial businesses offering unused spaces for various cultural music events. The second thing I would do to make Toronto a more lively music landscape is to expand the capacity of financial programs at the provincial and federal levels to provide the much-needed funds needed to support the music industry. Due to the high level of competition, existing financial programs tend to be project-specific and challenging for upcoming artists to access. Currently, the demand for these financial programs exceeds what the City is giving, thereby placing a huge financial burden on emerging artists, who require financial support to pay for studio space and even sustain themselves and their music projects.[Ibid.]
If I had the power, I would compel the City of Toronto to back its commitment to improving its music scene by increasing the number of funds it allocates to public-sector music funding programs. I would also abolish the restrictive funding requirements to support unestablished artists at different stages of their careers. Pivotal projects occur at different stages of an artist's career, and therefore eliminating the existing constricting funding conditions is pivotal. The third thing I would do to improve Toronto's music hub is revitalize the business of music: promoting the music business sector will not only increase the revenue generated from music stores, record labels, recording facilities, radio stations, and other entities but will also provide more platforms for emerging and multi-ethnic artists to present their music and earn more revenue.
