The Theme of Sacrifice in Allegiant
Allegiant is the third part of the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth. In her young–adult fiction, Roth sets her characters in a dystopian world with various challenges for survival. It covers many themes like peace, family, friendship, survival, identity, and sacrifice. The action and passion of sacrifice prevail in all parts of the novel, elevating the protagonist Tris, who endeavors to spread peace, happiness, and welfare at the expense of her survival. There are many other characters in the novel, like factionless, allocated to lay down their lives for others, highlighting the novel's theme with a different perspective when held against the definition of sacrifice by Tris. Tris sacrifices herself for others and sets an example of real sacrifice that rises from love and necessity in contrast to the other sacrifices in the novel, planned and set in motion by the authority for evil purposes, giving the novel its dystopian direction.
Tris, the novel's main character, is the most significant embodiment of sacrifice for noble purposes. She asserts the supremacy of human welfare and dignity of relationships over her emotions, peace, and even life. This passion of laying her life for her loved ones comes to her by her parents' unforgettable sacrifice. After the death of her parents, she has got the entire responsibility to protect her brother, Caleb, who betrays him, but stays important to her till her last breath. She recalls their death, "they died for me," and then she had to do things "in return" (Roth, 2013, p. 935). Not allowing Caleb to enter the Weapon Lab, which might prove a place of execution for him, she enters the lab herself. Struggling to set off death serum, she has to fight many people like Niti, and in the end, she is dead, but Caleb and countless human beings begin a new life (Lubis, 2016). Caleb also honors her sacrifice, saying, "she loved me. Enough to hold me at gunpoint so she could die for me" (Roth, 2013, p. 989).
Tris gives her life to save humanity and her loved ones as she sacrifices her inner self for others. She loves Tobias and waits for the right moment to express her feelings because her mission for humanity's welfare was more important for her than anything else. When she stops Caleb from going into the weapon lab by force, she foresees the deadly circumstances of taking the responsibility of saving her brother from execution and the people of the city from death serum. So, she tells about her love for Tobias to her brother and leaves a message expressing her love in case she dies in her attempt to save others (Lubis, 2016). In short, Tris plays the central role of justifying the theme of sacrifice in the novel. Her sacrifice is to save her loved ones and humanity as she cannot see people dying of death serum. She prefers others' well-being over her physical and emotional self to protect humanity and spread sanity in the dystopian world of Roth.
